The reboot of a lost franchise partly succeeds. They had to bring the old team back together for that to happen. To make this fit into what happened in the third film, Tokyo Drift, a bit of a rewind was necessary.

This then takes place after O'Conner is reinstated in the police force and Toretto returns to town. Of course, the storyline is of no importance here - only thing to remember to separate this from the others is that this is the one where they drive through the Mines of Moria.
