This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★½ Watched 24 Aug, 2012 2

Michael Powell never did it like this.

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★½ Watched 24 Jul, 2012 2

This was a weird, strange and annoying experience. Yes, the film too, but the viewing conditions didn't help. I watched it at Canal Theatres in New Orleans, and if I had owned a slightly bigger house my Home Theatre would have been the same size. However, I wouldn't have had 10 waiters running around serving drinks to my guests during the film. Also, all exits would have been at the back, so the fat bastard with the tiny bladder wouldn't…

  • Drive 2011

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 04 Aug, 2012 1

Really nice to see that my first impression still stands, sometimes it does not. Everything came together this time.
Of course Ryan Gosling is still unbelievably cool, Carey Mulligan is still very, very cute. But this time I appreciated the soundtrack even more. Man, that musical song near the end - now, that's a bold move. I got to fully appreciate Bryan Cranston's and Albert Brooks's performances. I noticed that Driver's name isn't mentioned (yeah, I'm slow sometimes). And the…

  • Skyfall 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 25 Feb, 2013

It was actually a better film this time around than when I watched it at the theater, review here.

I guess I've wanted Bond to remain the old Bond, a bit quirky franchise with the one-liner English gentleman agent, «out in a convertible, bird-doggin' chicks and bangin' beaver» with all the new unlikely technology at hand. Why? Because that's what that franchise was, something totally original to anything else.

Now that the new Bond is here I guess the most important is that the films are good and can compete with all the other action flicks on their turf. And this one can.

  • Skyfall 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 26 Oct, 2012 3

Premieres. The red carpet. The "champagne" and strawberries. Ticket tearers in their best suits. Crowded house! It really gets me in the mood, in moments such as these, movies are really best enjoyed at theaters.

It's always something special with a new Bond film. Everyone has an opinion. Will he be cool? Tough? Witty? All of the above? And in later years, I believe the expectations have been raised higher beforehand to whether the film itself will turn out to…

  • Looper 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 24 Dec, 2012

My, this was way better than I expected. I'd been postponing this because I thought it was another Inception, which it at all was not. I don't know why I would think that, because more or less everything the two have in common is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Well, that doesn't matter now. Most popular reviews of this are positive, and it's well deserved. The time travel concept is easy enough to understand, in fact several times in the film they refuse…

  • Argo 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 05 Feb, 2013

I've only seen half of this year's Oscar nominees (for best film), and I probably won't see them all. But this looks like the clear winner to me. Amour may be the best film, but as often has been the case, that doesn't really matter.

But Argo is really good too. It is both original and exciting, has a good script, it's not overly long, it's based on a true story, the events feels up-to-date even if the action takes…

  • Inception 2010

    ★★ Rewatched 06 Nov, 2012 18

Trying to rewatch this while lying sick in bed.

God, this is pretentious. I don't understand shit of what's really happening.

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★½ Watched 12 Dec, 2012

The film: Deeply needing the magic from the first part of the previous trilogy. There is hardly any warmth or love shared between the hobbits of the Shire, because they're simply not present. The dwarves does not compensate for this, I didn't find them half (sic!) as charming as I did the hobbits. I also felt that the mission was a bit hazy compared to mentioned trilogy. It must be mentioned however, that I actually haven't read the book, when…

  • Prometheus 2012

    ★★★ Watched 02 Jun, 2012 2

In Alien (see my recent review here), the crew consisted of a comprehensible number of seven. Prometheus takes that number and adds ten more people, making it impossible for us to get to know each and everyone of them. Most of them are merely cardboard figures. Besides, Ridley Scott doesn't seem to know at all times which direction to take, so to speak. The pace is uneven, and almost comes to a complete stop now and then. This partly has…

  • Moonrise Kingdom 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 20 Jun, 2012

As one of the true auteurs of modern cinema, Wes Anderson delivers once again. However I can understand it if he isn't everyone's cup of tea. Or if this particular film isn't. Because this is as far into his own world that he has ever journeyed. By that I don't mean that the story is hard to grasp or more far-fetched than usual. On the contrary. The animations, for instance, are kept to a minimum. What I'm aiming at is…
