Beyond the Black Rainbow 2011
Watched Apr 17, 2012
FilmApe’s review:
Tuned out after the first forty five minutes and focused on listening to the birds chirping outside. I imagined that the birds were two young lovers engaged in a quarrel for the first time. Most likely their fight was over food, which is a not uncommon thing for birds to fight about.
As for the film, I was interested up until the title card comes up around fifteen minutes in. Then it is downhill from there. Visually the film doesn't get any better than what is shown in the first fifteen, and the story is entirely uninteresting. What got me the most, was the amount of closeups there are in the film. There are entire scenes composed of closeups, and I hated it. The amount of close-ups result in no sense of the locations the characters are in, and in my opinion this is unforgivable.
I require one of two things from a science fiction film. Either the story should be intriguing, or the visuals should be fantastic. The best science fiction combines these two requirements. Beyond the Black Rainbow has neither requirement, and thus, I hated it. Now back to listening to birds.
That's funny shit man. I was thinking to myself when watching this that it's definately a love hate thing and I guess we know what side we're on. I just loved that the whole film was a trip and I loved the vibe of the film. You got to admit the score is pretty hip. I can see how you can hate it though. I usually love this kind of trippy shit and this didn't disapoint. Did the dreaded dead monkey come back?
I was gonna say if you dug this you shoulc check out Amer as both films are similar in tone. I guess you should stay far away from Amer now.
Is this film out now? I was blown away by the trailer, I really want to see this. This review makes me sad!
@ Peter. It's on Isohunt. I loved this film but I can see why filmape hated it. It's a love/ hate film for sure.
@grooveman: The score is good, and I contemplated giving this one star because of the score, but in the end, it sounds so similar to John Carpenter that I can't really give the film any credit for it.
The whole time I was thinking that this is more your thing than it is mine. We seem to differ the most with more extreme and bizarre films (you liking them, and I disliking them). I guess it was in the cards that I wouldn't like this.
As for the whole dead monkey business. I haven't decided if it deserves a place on the list or not. I'll need a couple days of deliberation.
I agree competely, Films like this is where our tastes differ the most.
I'm intrigued by the trailer. I'll definetly get around to this one.
