This is a pretty fantastic film, and I have no nostalgic connection to this at all. Heard lots of good things, and in my opinion it lives up to its reputation.
The best thing about the movie is the build up. The house that the movie takes place in is a great set, and the layout is shown in full long before the action takes place. This familiarity with the setting makes the thrills and chills all the more exciting once things get going. The creature effects are classic, and this lends a certain charm to the story. The effects hold up pretty well, and there are some rather impressive shots near the end.
With no hesitation I would put The Gate up beside my favorite children adventure films from the 80s.
