FilmApe’s review:
Having already seen the remake, seeing the original film has now confirmed two things for me.
1. This story holds absolutely no interest for me. I find zero suspense in the material, and in my opinion everything that happens, all the twists and turns, are extremely forced.
2. David Fincher is one of the most hit a miss directors working today. He does nothing with the remake that wasn't already done with this original telling. Its practically the same movie.
In the end, I feel I have to give the film three stars simply because that is what I gave the North American version. All the acting is very good, as is the direction, but that is all the praise the movie gets. Having now watched both versions of this story I now have zero interest in continuing the trilogy.
The trilogy gets worse from here. I still prefer Finchers version I think but not by much.
So I guess the question is Noomi Rapace or Rooney Mara?
Rapace but not by much. They're both good.
who do you like more?
It's a cop out, but I would have to say neither. This decision has nothing to do with the actresses, it has everything to do with the fact that Lisbeth is a boring character. For some reason if a performance involves being cold/emotionless/distant the performance is always hailed as something brilliant. This is bizarre to me as I see acting without emotion as being rather simple to do. Both Rapace and Mara are great actresses who have done much better work in other things.
