The Matrix 1999 ★★★

Rewatched Mar 27, 2012

Never been the biggest fan of this, and things haven't changed over the years. The action is fine, but the story doesn't do much for me.

  • I quite like this, mostly the training and I generally liked the world they created. Not so hot about Agent Smith though. Did you ever watch the other two? I only saw the second which I thought was terrible so I never checked out the last one.

  • I have not seen either of the sequels. Strangely enough I have seen all of the action scenes from Reloaded though. Someone played them for me back when it was first released on DVD. Still I remember nothing about these scenes.

Definitely would place Speed Racer as my favorite Washowski film. I am intrigued about their upcoming Cloud Atlas, but have no idea what that film will be like. Any thoughts on it?

  • I'm still a huge fan of this film. Have you seen Bound? I liked that one a lot.

  • @FilmApe, haven't seen Speed Racer but would definitely like to. Don't really know anything about Cloud Atlas. Isn't that the film with a lot of parallel stories and Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant are in it or something? If not, I know nothing about it.

@grooveman, haven't seen Bound. Supposed to be very good. Or, maybe you meant FilmApe, either way I haven't seen it :)

  • I got like twenty minutes into Bound and turned it off. That was years ago though, so I would be up to giving it another go.

@Aaron Twomey: Your correct on your description of Cloud Atlas. It sounds crazy, and it seems so ambitious, that there has to be a good chance that the film will not work. That being said, Tom Tykwer is also working on the film with the Washowski's, so there is a lot of impressive creative talent involved.

  • I actually agree (although I owe this movie a rewatch). The pseudo-philosophizing was lame to me even as a pot smoking 18-year-old. And I had seen wire work in Jet Li's movies before, so that didn't blow my mind as much as everybody else.

I also remember the middle 45 minutes or so being pretty dumb and kind of boring. The end is awesome, though.

    p.s. Never watch part 3.

  • @FilmApe, it definitely sounds interesting. I'll check it out for sure. I like Tykwer, at least what I have seen. Run, Lola, Run was awesome and I really, really liked Perfume. Have you seen that?

  • I recommend you guys give Bound a watch. It's really good.

  • @Jeff Isaacs: Your entirely correct. The middle 45 minutes is pretty boring, and this is the reason why the film doesn't work for me. Maybe if there was another action scene inserted in the middle stretch the film would be better.

@Aaron Twomey: Perfume is fantastic. I have only seen it once, but I remember being blown away by the last bit of film. The end is crazy. I have liked all of Tykwer's films that I have seen, though for some reason I have never sat through Princess and the Warrior (grooveman has loaned it to me multiple times and I have still never seen it).

  • Princess and the warrior is really good but I havn't seen it in 10 years. I've also only seen Perfume once but I remember loving it. I have a copy so I'll rewatch it soon. Man I have a lot of movies to rewatch.

  • The ending of Perfume was absolutely breathtaking. Good stuff.
