Really ambitious Thriller, masquerading as a police procedural but really about several quite difficult topics. Vast attempts to make it look non-televisual are largely successful, though the lead cop is too broad and a bit annoying. More on the site.

Jocular in parts but Grodin's character only really seems to get excited when the film dials up a big action set piece. Since bettered by several funnier buddy Comedies. More on the site.

Cheap as chips Thriller that goes absolutely nowhere. There's some fun in watching Cusack with a gun but that really is just about it. Antagonist is completely anonymous. More on the site.

So, so distant. Quell never grabbed me as a character like Daniel Plainview did and the story meanders for huge stretches. Phoenix is brilliant but I'm not buying that the film is. More on the site.

The series still hasn't bested its first outing and this holds a wider warning for Marvel's future: new stuff will be tried, not all of it will succeed, Ben Kingsley will be beardy. More on the site.

Clouzot makes an entertaining murder-mystery whilst France suffers under Nazi-occupation. The context is interesting but the film is occasionally all over the place tonally, with hi-camp and noir mixing sometimes uncomfortably. More on the site.

Eastwood grumbles through yet another curmudgeonly role that must see his heart thawed by something/someone emotionally poignant. This time it's Amy Adams and the anti-Moneyball approach to baseball. Still fine, but only if you're really interested in either of the above to elements. More on the site.

Pincus 2012
Slackerdom, reaching into the void, new age hippieness and Parkinson's combine, but somehow the latter element gets left behind. Charming enough, with a few dry laughs, but doesn't have huge amounts to say. More on the site.
