Ghuznee Film Society Review: Bruno
d. Larry Charles
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen
So, I guess it hit me right now: despite the gross-out comedy that prevails in this film, and the inability to live up to the vast comedic notoriety that Borat has carved into the public consciousness, Bruno again proves that Sacha Baron Cohen knows how to make a great mockumentary.
Staying true to the formula that admittedly tugged on my 16 year old heartstrings and laughter, uh, strings?, Bruno sets its satirical sights on the vapid fashion world and insidious (and at many times overt) homophobia that America is grounded in. I hear the ‘Acting as a Foreign and Eccentric Character to Highlight the Common Man’s Prejudices’ shtick is wearing thin with most of my peers, but maybe they’re all just homophobes.
