Silence ★★★½

Scorsese's latest is mesmerizing, proving that "they don't make them like they used to" may hold some weight. A unique modern experience in the sense that these types of films just don't get made anymore, not with name actors and pushed out by a major distributor, and even when things about the film seem very upfront, there's a layer beneath them, a complexity to wrestle with, that I found transfixing. There's plenty left for me to ponder, but damn if this wasn't an incredible experience.
