List by Richard Trondsen Pro
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Slasher Films (1974 - 1995)
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of slasher films, and here I've tried to compile a list of all the ones I've seen, ranked from favorite to least favorite. I've only included films made between 1974 and 1995. Why? Well, to me, the American slasher film (not counting Psycho and Peeping Tom (both 1960)) started with Black Christmas and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (both 1974) and was then resurrected in 1996 with the release of Wes Craven's Scream.
My wife and I are currently on a mission to watch every slasher film ever made (well, at least the ones from '74 to '95). She made her own list which you can view by clicking here!
It's not easy to define a slasher film, but I've done my best to only include films with enough "slasher elements" for them to be considered part of the (sub-)genre.
Some films that could be considered slashers, but aren't included in the list (should they be?):
Basket Case, Bloody New Year, Cemetery High, Children of the Corn, Class of 1984, Crosstalk, Cruising, Curfew, Dead & Buried, Dead of Winter, Demonic Toys, Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, Dolls, Don't Turn Out the Lights, Dressed to Kill, Dr. Lamb, Escape 2000, Evilspeak, Fear City, Fortress, Freeway, The Hand, The Hitcher, I Spit On Your Grave, The Island, The Last House on Dead End Street, Neon Maniacs, Nightbreed, Night Visitor, Mausoleum, Patrick, Playroom, Prison, Puppetmaster, Red to Kill, Scarecrows, Scream for Help, The Sender, Snapshot, Who Can Kill a Child?, Windows, The Witch Who Came from the Sea.
Aenigma, Body Puzzle, A Blade in the Dark, A Cat in the Brain, Delirium: Photo of Gioia, Demonia, Dial: Help, The House of Clocks, The New York Ripper, Nothing Underneath, Midnight Ripper, Murder Rock, Opera, Phenomena, Rat Man, The Scorpion with Two Tails, Shock, Tenebre, Touch of Death, The Washing Machine.
Comments are more than welcome!
NOTE: The ranking (especially in the middle part) isn't exactly 100%, as ranking over 400 films was no easy task (and it's been a while since I've seen a lot of them).

You also have to go through the list and remove the non-slasher ;)
Wow thanks for this amazing list!, added loads to my watch list. Seen quite a few but there so many I haven't even heard of. Hopefully there are some hidden slasher gems. Thanks again for all your hard work. Will be fun watching :-)
Thanks for the kind words. There are still a lot of slasher films from this period that I still haven't seen (and that are not on this list), believe it or not.
Wow.
This is the exact type of list I've been looking for.
Thank you so so so much.
Wow, what a great list and a perfect reference for all us slashaholics out there! Some i've not heard of that i'll be sure to check out. Thanks!
Only 28...
Sorry, not good enough. ;-)
But honestly, this list is like more than half of all horror movies I've seen in my life... I'll use it to get some movies the same way I'm going to do with Hollie's list.
Great list Richard. You've inspired me to dig out my VCR, got a couple from this list I own but haven't seen yet. Hopefully it still works
Thanks, Chris. I hope your VCR works! I still own one, too, but haven't used it in forever. Which films from the list do you own (and have yet to see)?
