Top 13: American Slasher Films, 1980-1984

Once again, for a film to qualify for this list, it needed to fulfill the following criteria:

- Made (primarily) in either the U.S. or Canada.
- Have enough "slasher elements" for it to be considered part of the sub-genre.
- Not a sequel (as I want variety in these lists I'm currently doing).
- Not made for TV.

13 Honorable Mentions:

Don't Go in the House, Christmas Evil, Sleepaway Camp, Visiting Hours, Hell Night, Madman, The Funhouse, Fade to Black, Night Warning, Slumber Party Massacre, Prom Night, Pranks, and Blood Rage.

  • This is pretty much spot on! The Burning is fantastic, but I need to see four of these (Alone, Nightmare, Happy Birthday and Dawn)! Do you prefer the unrated cut of My Bloody Valentine or the regular one? I do wish they were able to clean up all that gore footage, but I'll take it.

  • Thanks! The Burning has been one of my favorite slasher films since I first got into the (sub-)genre. I, of course, prefer the unrated cut of My Bloody Valentine. The gorier, the merrier. As for the four films you haven't seen -- what are you waiting for?! ;-)

  • Another interesting list - keep 'em coming! :-)

Whilst I do like The Burning, it's never been a favourite of mine; Maniac would probably be my no.1 choice for this period. It's good to see Nightmare ahead of the franchise favourites, too. I do love Don't Go in the House though, and it would definitely be high up on my list, along with the (unrated!) cut of My Bloody Valentine.

  • :D Can't go wrong with The Burning. And yeah, unrated all the way. Nothing, added to Watchlist, will get on 'em!
