The American 2010
The American is, at heart, a character portrait of a craftsman. It just so happens his craft is making weapons for assassins. On his last job in a remote foreign town, Clooney's character spends his time isolating himself as much as possible while building a gun from spare parts. It's a simple story, but satisfying, and the tension built from scene to scene increases as Clooney tries to figure out his potential post-craftsman life while trying to avoid falling in love or being killed.

My Cousin Vinny 1992
I've probably seen My Cousin Vinny 15 times in my life. And you know what? Every single time I've enjoyed it just as much. It's funny, well-crafted and unique. Pesci and Tomei are at the top of their game and the courtroom scenes are terrific. I'll probably watch this again once every few years for the rest of my life.

Coneheads 1993
A classic that still holds up. Probably the only truly successful SNL-to-movie characters who are funny, fully realized and heartwarming. Solid performances by Aykroyd and Curtin and a huge supporting cast of funny people and a simple but solid story. I'm just thrilled they resisted the urge to ruin this masterpiece with a terrible sequel.

Sex and the City 2 2010
Even worse than the first one, and I hated the shit out of that film. Offensive to women, muslims, people in general. Pitiful, boring, painfully long, meaningless, meandering, pandering, annoying, stupid, tasteless and awful. If they make a third film I would consider it an act of global terrorism.

Chronicle 2012
The found footage thing is beyond played, and not even really necessary to make this film work, but they found interesting ways to work around the limitations and even made it part of the story. I'm a sucker for super hero origin stories, and that's what the heart of this film is. It was fun to watch from start to finish, and regardless of the sometimes-silly camera games, it worked really well.

Sex and the City 2008
One of the worst films ever made. For starters, this concept is about 10 years dead. These actresses are too old, and none were particularly great to begin with. To make matters worse, the characters have become so completely out of touch with reality, it's amazing to me any non-millionaire would enjoy watching this film. The Grey 2012
I left the theater covered in sweat. This film is tense, raw and visually stark and beautiful. The plane crash scene is one of the best, most terrifying depictions I've seen in a film to date (and it will no doubt haunt me for months to come), and the last hour is hard to watch in the best possible way.

Pina 2011
This isn't a film I should really be rating in the general sense. It's a love letter to the choreographer Pina Bausch and it isn't meant to be extraordinarily deep or thorough or separately meaningful. It's a pseudo-documentary starring Pina's dance company speaking about Pina and her work and her legacy, cross-cut with cinematic performances of notable numbers. I'm not a huge fan of modern dance, but I still appreciated the visuals and the music.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011
A terrific version of a very complicated story, and significantly better than the Swedish version. Fincher's handling of color, sound and mood is expert and it was so much fun to watch the musical opening and have flashbacks of Fight Club and Seven. Great film. If only Fincher would direct the other two in the trilogy.

Groundhog Day 1993
An absolute classic. I've seen this film nearly as many times as Phil relives Groundhog Day, and it has never gotten old.
