Mike M’s review:
Even though they completely mislead viewers in the pre-release trailers, this movie was still a fun watch.
While the previews sold it as more of your standard Johnny Depp comedy, it really wasn't very funny. It was, however, a pretty decent story with some cool action and effects.
As usual, Tim Burton's prints are all over this movie. If you've seen any of his, you'll know what I mean. Johnny Depp was the only person now that could pull off Barnabus and Eva Green (a favorite of mine) was absolutely perfect as his nemesis, Angelique. Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, and Helena Bonham Carter were pretty forgettable as their roles really could have played by anybody. Which was disappointing, as I usually really enjoy Haley. The odd duck here was Chloe Grace Moretz. I've pretty much loved everything she's done so far (Kick Ass, Let Me In, and Hugo for example). But here she started pretty good, but towards the end turned pretty odd. I believe it was more due to plot events rather than anything she did, but I won't give that away.
I do recommend seeing it at least once. Burton and Depp fans will probably jump all over it while most will probably be like me and enjoy it once and never really think of it again.
