Dawn of the Dead 2004 ★★★

Rewatched Aug 06, 2012

Zack Snyder's first feature is confidently directed. It is often style over substance but it isn't as hollow as the director's future efforts. A completely modern take on the narrative where the social commentary is more focused on the stereotyped characters than a direct attack on consumerism. The zombies have been updated as they've all gone to the 28 days later school of aggression. But these zombies work well with the narrative pacing and the films kinetic action beats. It has the minimal requirement of character development to sustain its running time, but nothing too deep. This is an enjoyable horror romp and an above average zombie caper.
