The Rocketeer 1991
A fun action adventure which is faithful to its pulp roots. Billy Campbell and Jennifer Connelly are quite wooden, but Timothy Dalton's ridiculous villian and Alan Arkin's father figure make up for it. The films style is nostalgic and Joe Johnston has fun with the source material. One for all the family.

The Last Exorcism Part II 2013
A pointless sequel that spends its running time limping around horror cliché before it delivers a climax that has no impact.
-
The Lords of Salem 2013
Another self indulgent horror film from Rob Zombie. We get it, you think your wife's hot and the devil's cool.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief 2010
Chris Columbus' adaptation of Rick Riordan's first novel maybe considered a cheap knock off of a certain boy wizard by some, but it does stand on its own as an entertaining family film.
Using Greek gods as a basis, the film modernizes the myths and makes them accessible to all. A simple but entertaining plot that is elevated by fun performances from its cast. The three central teen actors have great chemistry and Logan Lerman is a solid lead.
The… -
5150 Elm's Way 2009
This French Canadian psychological thriller is utterly compelling. Its first act plays with your expectations and really draws you in. This solid foundation means that you care for Yannick's plight. However the film does manage to become a little predictable in places.
It is an interesting piece about the nature of the self-confessed righteous and the influence they have on the world around them. This is perfectly shown in Yannick's character arc. Starting off as an unwanted prisoner, our hero… -
Splinter 2008
A great creature concept and impressive practical effects don't save this horror film from descending into a unintentional comedy.
The predictable solutions to the protagonists problems and the stark lack of realism (he would have bled to death after the Stanley knife incident) damage the film completely.
A waste of a good concept. -
28 Days Later... 2003
Danny Boyle's take on the zombie genre is a brisk exercise in tension. Using a deserted London to full effect, Boyle has crafted a world ravaged by an apocalyptic plague that is all too familiar.
The infected are quick and their appearances give the film an explosion of action. The speed of the creatures only enhances the terror of the situation.
The film's cast are excellent with Cillian Murphy delivering an fine breakout performance. The script by Alex Garland is… -
The Blair Witch Project 1999
The film that made found-footage a household genre, The Blair Witch Project is a film that has a few decent shocks and a genuinely creepy ending.
Often though the film is just a wash with shaky camera movements, crying and shouting. Most of these elements are necessary to sell the overall idea, but they do become irritating.
But the element that really drags the film down is the film's final girl. Heather Donahue's performance ranges from annoying brat to hysterical… -
Jeepers Creepers 2001
Victor Salva's creation is a mash up of several horror sub-genres. Each individual part comes together to make a disjointed, but satisfying whole.
The film's horror elements deliver the right amount of frights and gore to entertain anyone. Although it's the film's surprise reveal and tonal shift that is the most inventive. When it becomes a monster movie with a lot of dark comedy it subverts expectations. The twist doesn't fully work as the ridiculous nature of it almost derails… -
Star Trek Into Darkness 2013
J. J. Abrams sequel to his 2009 reboot is solid blockbuster entertainment. Its loud, flashy and funny. With the director once again jumping head first into his sexier version of the beloved franchise.
The main ingredient for the film's success is once again the ship's crew. The Pine/Quinto/Urban trinity are on fine form. Each one of them quipping and emoting to full effect. Pegg and Saldana also get more to do here in the sequel and their beefed up screen… -
Atlantis: The Lost Empire 2001
Disney decides to take a very different approach with Atlantis. It is a more mature affair than the studio's usual output.
Directors Trousdale and Wise deliver a film that is fast paced and packed with action. The climatic battle in particular is somewhat breathtaking.
But it is Mike Mignola's influence on the art style and the pulp science fiction narrative that makes Atlantis unique. The film-makers attempts to tackle themes of anti-imperialism also add a layer of depth that is…
