  • Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo 2013

    ★★★½ Watched 04 May, 2013

    Pros:
    +Explosive angel/eva battles
+Asuka kicking ass with an eye patch
    +Rei in black plugsuit
    +Motherfucking Gendo
    +Glorious fanservice still present
    +Shinji fucking everything up
    +Kaworu and Shinji relationship

    Cons:
-Overly chaotic opening scene; hard to follow the action
    -Effects feel superfluous
-Deviated from the original story line a bit too much for my liking
    -lack of character motivations
    -Shinji fucking everything up

This is the weakest part so far of the Rebuild franchise, but being an Eva fan I…

  • I am Cuba 1964

    ★★★★ Watched 28 Feb, 2013

This is definitely one of the most gorgeous films I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. I never thought that government propaganda could be done with such beauty. The film is compromised of several short stories about the plight of common Cubans and without a doubt the one about the poor farmer is the most emotionally gripping. That's not to say that the others aren't well done as well.

Have strong leftist views? You'll love this film.
Have strong right wing views? You'll still love this film.

  • On the Waterfront 1954

    ★★★★ Watched 19 Feb, 2013

Brando absolutely kills it as Terry Malloy, a troubled ex-boxer who does what he has to do to fit into the crime ridden world he lives in. Right off the bat we witness that Terry is much more than just some brainless goon, unlike the rest of his crew he lets his conscience show and openly objects to the brutality of Johnny Friendly's(played brilliantly by Lee J. Cobb) organization. My main criticism would probably have to be the lack of…

  • Amélie 2001

    ★★★½ Watched 24 Jan, 2013 1

    What I liked:
    - Cute story
    - Cute Amelie
    - Cute humor
    - Parisian atmosphere
    - Travelocity Gnome

    What I didn't like:
    - Perhaps a bit too cute for my liking, felt a little bit forced at times
    - A reminder that Amelie is not my gf

I would definitely recommend this if you are fan of Wes Anderson's work, the narrative and humor is very much in the same vein. This has me looking forward to watching Jeunet's other films.

  • House 1977

    ★★★ Watched 12 Oct, 2012

The unique style had me really intrigued for the first part but at about the half way point I was so focused on Kung-Fu's ass that I sort of lost track of the plot. By the end credits I was more aroused than frightened. Nevertheless, this is a very interesting film and also my 100th film watched since joining Letterboxd earlier this year! Worth a watch, probably funnier with friends and/or alcohol.

  • The Master 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 21 Sep, 2012

Although "The Master" is not on the same cinematic level as "There Will Be Blood" was, it's still excellent. Joaquin and Hoffman play off each other so well and is definitely the high point of the film. The scene with the two of them in the jail cells is so god damn brilliant that it had me in awe the whole time. You can tell that these guys really gave these performances everything they had and it makes up for the slightly weak direction. Will definitely be rewatching!

  • Jiro Dreams of Sushi 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 15 Jul, 2012

You will definitely gain a new appreciation of not only sushi, but food in general as an art form. This documentary takes on several themes including: the importance of determination and hard work, generation clashes, environmental concerns, and the difficulty of living up to expectations. All of these themes are woven together masterfully throughout the film and by the end a craving for fresh sushi will overcome you.

WARNING: Do NOT watch on an empty stomach! May cause excessive mouth watering!

  • North by Northwest 1959

    ★★★½ Watched 27 Jun, 2012

I was definitely expecting something a bit more serious but I was relatively pleased at the silliness. There was good performances all around and a story that keeps you interested throughout. It also has one of the funniest endings I've ever seen.

  • Get the Gringo 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 23 Jun, 2012

Great Mel Gibson action flick. It gets a little cheesy at times but it's a good balance. The whole design of the Mexican prison was wonderfully done and even though there's child character, he really holds his own next to Mel. It's just a shame that Hollywood won't let this wide, more people should see this.

  • Perfect Blue 1998

    ★★★★ Added

Right from the get-go I could tell that I was going to be in for one of the strangest and creepiest anime movies I have watched. Even during the opening pop idol concert with the really lighthearted, bubbly pop song I felt a sense of darkness looming. And as always with Satoshi Kon, the animation and story are beautiful and I'm definitely going to be checking out his other works. Although you may be confused throughout, I highly recommend this film.

  • The Thing 2011

    ★★ Added 1

Took everything great from the 1984 version and completely ruined it. No suspense, no practical effects, no RUSSELL, no originality.

Perhaps if it was stand alone film, it'd be a mediocre monster flick.

  • The Birds 1963

    ★★★★ Added

This was both one of my first horror movies and my first Hitchcock film and I still love to this day. It sounded silly when I first read the synopsis as a kid but man did it freak me out. It's not a perfect film(mainly in acting department), but it will definitely keep you interested throughout.
