Stay 2005 ★★★½

Watched Aug 07, 2012

The premise behind Stay is written in the synopsis, though the interesting concept is heightened beautifully by the performances, cinematography and editing.

Ewan McGregor takes the role of protagonist Sam, his character develops immensely throughout the narrative at rapid and random pacing. McGregor is able to keep up with this and truly puts in a stellar performance.

Ryan Gosling takes on the role of Henry. Coming two years after the United States of Leland, he adopts a similar style to this also depressed, troubled young man. Ensuring he isn't a carbon copy of his former character, Gosling shows a development in maturity as an actor - providing raw and real emotion in a bizarre atmosphere.

Showcasing perfectly the confusion of reality on screen is the partnership of cinematography and editing. Heavy use of jump cuts and rapid graphic matching juxtapose the free flowing transitions with a jerky style. Aesthetically displaying the minds of the characters on screen.

The films fantastic crafting, along with well directed acting causes for an original and beautiful storytelling experience.
