John Carpenter’s review:
I didn't fall in love with "John Carter," but I was entertained for most of the film. The slow start will certainly be hard for some, but once Andrew Stanton gets the story rolling, it is a fun ride. The 3D had a few moments that were nice, but overall I would say 2D viewing is fine.
I read Princess of Mars in preparation for this and I'm now quiet excited after not being blown away by the trailers. I'm not expecting a masterpiece, but so long as it's a fun ride I'm ok with it. Your review is encouraging.
Did you check it out? What did you think?
I've not had chance yet - our local cinema is ludicrously overpriced so I only go on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when I can get a discount. Probably going to go next week.
One of the best things about John Carter is how it makes sense of ERB's crazed plotting, tightening things up while also leaving it episodic like an old Flash Gordon serial. That unorthodox structure may have been what's been deterring many critics. That and the joy of piling on something weakened by bad publicity.
