  • The Dark Knight 2008

This slow-moving, weirdly voiced 179 hours was single-handedly saved by Heath Ledger's stunning performance. Seriously, the stars are for him.

  • Inception 2010

    ★★★½ Watched 01 Apr, 2013

This exactly the type of story that suits Christopher Nolan's large-scale vision, which is why (even though it is holey and sometimes confusing) Inception is a triumph compared to his dismal Batman franchise. Gordon-Levitt is such a sexy little man...

  • Silver Linings Playbook 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 22 Apr, 2013

A dignified yet brutally honest protrayal of mental illness, the people it effects, and the people they effect in turn. A terrific performance from Lawrence. And who would have thought Bradley Cooper had that in him??

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 08 Jan, 2013

My initial reaction still applies, but boy are the issues near irrelevant on re-watch. Galadriel's costume is still an eye-sore, however, not that most viewers would have noticed, but after the triumph of Ngila Dickson's effort, it stuck out like a nun at the Playboy mansion. Richard Armitage's Thorin is totally badass, and Martin Freeman's Bilbo is pitch-perfect.

It was okay. It was kind of a lot of self-indulgence really, but you wanted to go along for the ride. Super acting, particularly from Jackson, but whose surprised?

  • Fight Club 1999

    ★★★★★ Added

An insomniac's struggle with status and materialism manifests itself into an underground fight club, where white and blue-collar joes alike take their frustrations out on each other with fury and fists. That’s what it says on the box; in actuality, this film is simply genius. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt give the performances of their careers, and David Fincher brilliantly captures the dark undertones of Chuck Palahniuk’s original text. Watch it, even if you know the twist.

  • Zero Dark Thirty 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 02 Feb, 2013

While I enjoyed the look and confrontational nature of this film, I don't think it translated as the writer/director would have liked. Much like my issue with 'Hitchcock', I was confused by what this film was trying to be- a biopic or a conventional movie. Regardless of this quality, I enjoyed a lot of what was there, particularly the strong performances and haunting score.

  • The Hunger Games 2012

    ★½ Watched 20 Apr, 2012

Yet another example of a brilliant premise unworthy of its writer. Just as frustrating as the novel. What a shame.
