Film snobs are sure to write this off as a popcorn movie, but by God did this zombie novice have a great night!

Funny, fresh, sweet and oddly moving, this film is nothing short of entertaining. Superb performance by Nicholas Hoult; his commitment to not blinking for the entire piece is commendable. Theresa Palmer, who I nothinged until this point, impressed too. Great cinematography, a cheeky script and a truly superb soundtrack makes this zom-rom-com my favourite film of 2013 so far.

Gotta love bitches.

While I enjoyed the look and confrontational nature of this film, I don't think it translated as the writer/director would have liked. Much like my issue with 'Hitchcock', I was confused by what this film was trying to be- a biopic or a conventional movie. Regardless of this quality, I enjoyed a lot of what was there, particularly the strong performances and haunting score.

My initial reaction still applies, but boy are the issues near irrelevant on re-watch. Galadriel's costume is still an eye-sore, however, not that most viewers would have noticed, but after the triumph of Ngila Dickson's effort, it stuck out like a nun at the Playboy mansion. Richard Armitage's Thorin is totally badass, and Martin Freeman's Bilbo is pitch-perfect.

Although clever and funny at some points, this film left me pretty underwhelmed. I spent majority of the film trying to figure out if it was a biopic, a behind the scenes of the making of Psycho, or a drama about a man who doesn't trust his wife. The lack of clarity, for me, resulted in my giving credit to the performances only.

Biopics are tough to get right, especially when the subject has input on what can and cannot be included. Also, no matter who's in charge, it always comes across as made-for-TV douchiness. So imagine my surprise when I watched a thoughtful and intriguing story focusing not only on Asange's start in computer hacking, but the personal emotional journey that drove him to push those boundaries. Williams is a stand-out, and an up-and-comer to look out for. Kudos go to the usual suspects, as well as Samuel, who has floored me more than once with his talent.

From the shocking opening sequence, to the stunning, sure-to-be-Oscar-winning make-up job on Gordon-Levitt (who was exceptional, by the way), this movie has a lot to love. Was very surprised by the depth in the story. The animation was absolutely wonderful- I cannot speak highly enough of it. The voice work was well executed, and the story was at once touching, scary and funny. Kudos to the writer for not only including a gay character is a children's film, but painting him as a real person who just happens to be gay.

Ruby Sparks is about a writer whose latest protagonist miraculously comes to life. Except it really isn’t. It’s actually about our fruitless pursuit for the perfect partner, wrapped up in a charming magic-realism story of a desperate writer who becomes obsessed with his muse. The fact that these two concepts marry so effortlessly is a credit to writer (and co-star) Zoe Kazan.

Took a while to put my thoughts in order. Here goes:

As a remake, it was better than Raimi’s Spiderman. Andrew Garfield’s portrayal was infinitely more nerdy and brilliant than Maguire could ever have hoped to achieve. His transition from awkward nerd to almost over-confident man was far more believable and endearing too. Also, the scene where Peter discovers his abilities is TEN (10) TIMES BETTER than the original’s- no question, non-debatable.

As an adaptation of the comics… faithful, but…
