I have the Soska Sisters remake on order so time for a rewatch of the original.

It's been a while since I last saw this but it will forever have a special place in my shlock movie appreciating heart. First time I came across it I was just 15 or 16 and my school class was on a skiing trip to Bavaria. We went out for a few drinks one night with the teachers (not that unusual... beer is legal…

I was always convinced that this film is about the state of horror fandom in the 1980s.

Fandom has changed since then. Now horror has to be inoffensive, cannot be "problematic" and slow burn is a badge of honour as long as there is a single money shot at the end of the film.

In 1983 it was all about finding that one film that would cross the boundaries even further. When films weren't that easy to come by and…

Probably not the most original insight but 3.5 hours is way to long to watch Leonardo Dicaprio's drawn down jowl trying to badly channel Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro.

Or listen to endless lines of dialogue that for a large part just consist of repeating sentences that the other character had just said before à la:

    "You need to sign this."
    "I need to sign this?"
    "You need to sign this."
"Why do I need to sign this?"
"You just need to sign this."
    "I need to sign this?
    "You need to sign this."

I'm very divided about this film.

On the one hand I really love road movies and this production does so much right. It looks great and the actors are superb, the characters they play engaging.

And yet every time I felt being fully immersed in it all, it brought up some predictable cookie cutter soap-opera turn or statement that snapped me right out of it with my eyes rolling around my head. I even felt myself mumbling: "Please don't let…

One of the very last silent movies to be made and also one of the best.

Incredibly fast paced production with a quasi-modern sensibility for its pulp fiction imagery.

A would-be African explorer discovers that adventure is just a few steps away from his New York home when he together with his fiancee gets kidnapped and they are both forced to take part in black magic and satanic rituals in a vast mansion.

The film is chockablock with pulpy tropes…

Story about young love in Spain. Not much of a plot or any kind of genuine creative tension but, hey, the film is in Spanish so it all sounds and looks sexier than it genuinely is. The beauty of subtitles.
