List by Hollie Horror Pro
Teens, Sex, Drugs and Bloody Murder!
In this list I'm going to keep track of all the slasher films I have seen from it's magnificent beginning in the prototypes of 1974 until it's petering out in 1995 only to be reborn in 1996 with Wes Craven's Scream, so that's a perfect place for this list to end.
My husband and I have been watching slasher films together since we met and we've both bonded over our love for the overused and abused sub-genre. Together we've been working on watching every slasher film ever made.
We're both creating lists and you can find his here.
I gave up on ranking the list from favorite to least and decided to go with a more organized ranking. The films are ranked by year, alphabetically according to the year.
I've also tried to exclude films that are normally included within the genre that are not by my definition--slasher films. For example, Richard may have some movies in his list I do not consider slasher films for whatever reason, he's a bit more accepting and open minded about the definition and if it has a few elements he will include it. Here's a direct definition I tend to stick to from WIKI: "[The] Slasher film is a sub-genre of the horror film genre typically involving a psychopathic killer stalking, and killing a sequence of victims in a graphically violent manner..." With this, I feel it's important to mention that if you don't see any Italian horror heavyweights that you're sure I have seen, it's because I consider them gialli more than slasher. For a list of all the gialli I have seen, please go here for my Black Gloves, J&B, Sharp Objects and A Little Mystery list.
The New Blood could've had the best and goriest deaths in the entire series if it hadn't been for the MPAA. Bastards!
Richard, we are in complete agreement on that!
I told Richard that I sometimes limit myself to what I consider slasher by thinking to myself: "Did the people who wrote and directed and acted in this film know they were making a slasher? Did they actually think, oh wow, this is a totally fun slasher movie." Cause if not, you can probably exclude it from a slasher list, besides of course, the protoslashers from the 70s.
In most cases I prefer the formulaic stuff, myself.
Interesting approach. I'm fairly sure that'll work. At least it gives it a very clear agenda.
I can tell you both do. Sometimes change is good, but I want my slasher films to have certain qualities to them. That's what makes them fun! And interesting.
It helps me keep on track because otherwise you can start adding all sorts of stuff, considering it has "slasher elements" as Richard likes to say.
Great list thanks for this! love retro slashers there are lots of obscure ones on here i've not heard of. Oh well more for the ever growing watchlist!!
Thanks, Horrorlover :)
On a side note: I've reordered the list, it is no longer ranked from favorite to least but by year starting with 1974 and ending with 1995. Each year is alphabetized as well. It is interesting to see the films decline over the years in quality too..
I'm disapointed with myself... I've seen only 20 of those 243...
There's no time like the present to start!
You are right! I'm adding some to my watchlist.
