Top 20 Zombie Films (Ranked)

I've been avoiding zombie films lately because it seems as though everywhere you look some asshole is posting on facebook about bath salts and how they knew the zombie apocalypse was coming, there are television shows about zombies, board games, t-shirts, it's 100% commercialized and I wonder when it's going to go the way of the slasher film after it's peak in the 1980s.

Regardless of how I feel towards zombie films now, I will always love them. I just need a break from watching any z-movies for a while :)

Here's a list of the top best 20 zombie films I've ever seen. Oh, and "best" is relative, our definitions may be a bit skewed. I am pretty firm in this being my top 20, it's been the same favorite 20 for some time now.

  • Sometimes I think in adding Wild Zero I'm remembering it more fondly than I should, I've been contemplating replacing it with a different Asian zombie film and I think I'm going to do that right about now.

    Which 2 haven't you seen?

  • "The Video Dead" has popped up on Netflix Streaming. Do you suggest I give it a watch?

  • I would suggest it to anyone and everyone, now, I love it, very much but this does not mean it's a "good" movie but don't let me fool you, it's by far a "fun" movie!! The zombie with the glasses and the scene with the washing machine..you just wait, they're the cutest zombies EVER!

  • Grapes of death and wild zero. Have you seen Junk? Highly recommended if you like japanese zombies

  • Love this list and the fact that you didn't put any staples in the first five slots (Night, Dawn, Return or Braindead). Also love that Burial Ground is there. That midget that played the 12 tear old kid will haunt me forever. Have you seen Messiah of Evil?

  • @Cory yes, I've seen Junk and I wasn't really crazy about it.

@Scott while I do not underestimate the greatness of Romero's NOTLD '68 (and love it) I prefer the 1990 remake, while it was directed by Savini it was obviously heavily influenced by Romero and he was able to write it in an up-to-date way without Russo's grimy hands all over it. Ha, you must mean Peter Bark. I love that he was playing a child, yet he wore a toupee. I'm not sure if he was a midget per say, maybe a dwarf? I think he has some sort of medical condition though because dwarfism/little people tend to have different features? I don't think I've seen Messiah of Evil but there's a slight possibility that I have, I wouldn't know unless I watched it again. Every now and then I come across a horror film that I can't quite remember if I've seen it or not and then once it starts I'll find out my answer definitively.

  • Switched out Bio Zombie for Messiah of Evil.

  • Do you watch The Walking Dead, Hollie? I know you say you avoid zombie things currently but it really is rather good.

  • I've never seen it, Jim! I've heard great things about it, though. I will get to it eventually, I'm not sure how many seasons they intend on having but I'd like to watch it when it's completed so I can just watch the episodes consecutively, I HATE waiting week to week, ha!

  • I know exactly what you mean. TV DVD viewing is sublime if the show is up to it. Walking Dead has never been better at the minute. Series 3 early stages are the high point of a good show. It's like the show begins where a lot of zombie films end. It's about continuing to survive and not losing your head and humanity. I shall say no more about it :-)
