You Should've Quit After 1
Don't you just hate crap sequels? When the original is so good you wish they'd have just left it alone.
Here's a bunch of films franchises that should never have got past the first motion picture.

bizarre_eye and JurassicGriffin, Halloween was the only one I wasn't 100% on here. The first is fantastic and I have a lot of time for 2, 3 and H20. My reasoning for originally adding it was because of the abysmal crap that is The Curse of Michael Myers and Resurrection (and to a lesser extent 4 & 5).
It's coming off the list. I wasn't going to fanny about and waver on my choices but I'm glad yous talked me out of it.
I had to add Never Ending Story because having 2 sequels kinda takes the piss out of the title. Plus... they were both shit.
Oh... and The Land Before Time. Enjoyed it as a kid but it had TWELVE fucking sequels!!! I only caught the first couple and part of another but jeeez... why did they even bother? Did anybody still care by the time The Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends came out?
Resurrection wasn't that bad, really. There's some random stuff going on, and a couple of horrible characters, but it's better than the two Rob Zombie movies and The Curse of Michael Myers. By a lot.
I have to admit to liking both the third Nightmare on Elm Street and the second PotC more than the originals. Other than that, I entirely agree with the rest of the list.
Nightmare 3: Dream Warriors? Yup... That's a good entry but sadly the series is bogged down with its other 4 entry's.
Not sure I count Wes Craven's New Nightmare as part of the series.
I Can't really think of POTC 2 without POTC3. Love Bill Nighy and Kraken but the all encompassing story is a clusterfuck of a mess. A big stupid, fun and silly mess
I thought the 2nd Pirates sequel was actually well done. DEAD MAN'S CHEST is actually my favorite of the series (PEARL is still the best one though) ... It had multiple subplots with interesting revelations and transitions that perfectly set up the 3rd film. AT WORLD'S END was indeed very bloated, and I think they could of cut a good 45 mintues out of that film, an dit wouldnt of hurt ... but it was still ok. TIDES I agree, was very dissappointing.
UNDER SIEGE 2 - nothing special, but a harmless action movie (it's DIE HARD on a train).
SHREK 2- was a great sequel ... however they clearly ran out of ideas aftewards because 3 and 4 blowed.
RELOADED and REVOLUTIONS - only redeeming quality of those films was Hugo Weaving's AGENT SMITH. A great villain that was tragically wasted ... especially in the 3rd.
SAW - I enjoyed most of the SAW sequels ... if SAW is on the list ... HALLOWEEN, ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13th, and the god awful, atrocious, abomiination of a horror series CHILD'S PLAY needs to be on this list.
Gumby77: The thing with Under Siege 2 for me is that it's a little "too" harmless. Many action films take the central premise of "Die Hard on a ...", but there's not a shred of originality in that film at all. It's bland, not very engaging, and the main villains are nowhere near as well written as Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. While it's not quite Speed 2, in my opinion it isn't far behind.
Shrek was always going to be a divisive addition to this list but I'm with Del Boy on this. Shrek 2 doest hold up to the original and relied heavily on "knowing" references for it's laughs. It had some standout moments but I was nowhere near as enamoured with the sequel. The 3rd was a massive turd and I truly think if they'd managed to crack it, we'd have been looking at Shrek sequels every 2 years, instead of them bottling it and calling the 4th (which was already in production), the "Final Chapter". The 4th was my favourite of the sequels because it dared to be a little different plot-wise. It's slightly darker and more or less done away with the witty references. Overall, do I feel I could have done without any more Shrek after the 1st? Yes I do. Before Disney started whoring itself with those awful Direct To DVD sequels, you could view a Disney classic as a stand alone story, set apart from the cynical bullshit that perpetuates these "tacked on" franchises. After all... fairy tales tend to not have sequels.
I'm in total agreement about Hugo Weaving. He could act his way through the phone book and I'd find it engaging. "Tacked on" sequels are the bane of modern cinema. When an original film becomes a success and the writers/ producers/ director are quoted saying, "ah yes, well, this story was originally intended as a Trilogy". Then the sequels utterly fail to live up to the original.
My answer to that is always... "Bollocks".
As with the Horror franchises. As much as I enjoyed the Saw sequels for their sheer stupidity and soap opera-like continuation. Jigsaw and co's motives and reasonings behind killing, torturing or testing victims became too convoluted and lacked the purity of the original. It was all strung out too long and by the end, totally tarnished the original, which as a stand alone feature is amazing. Hallowen... bizarre_eye and jurassicgriffin talked me round as 2 and H20 are both very accomplished films. H20 especially. Nightmare On Elm Street has maybe one good sequel (3, as mentioned by Jake Musselman), and as for Friday 13th... I generally liked at least 4 of the 8 million sequels, so in that regard i holds a similar post to Halloween, which is why it ain't on the list.
You are totally correct with Child's Play. That goes on here.
And I ain't counting remakes... remakes tend to be complete dickfarts.
The Butterfly Effect and The Hill's Have Eyes are a couple films I enjoyed where the sequels are awful.
Cheers Ron. I'll be sure to catch them at some point and add them to the list accordingly.
I was never a fan of The Butterfly Effect. A great central premise, shoddily managed.
A horrible thing to admit to, but I don't remember ever seeing the original The Hills Have Eyes. I know... I know... My bad
Agree with your point on UNDER SIEGE 2 ... the villains definitely werent as good as Jones and Busey, but I find it as a harmless, action, popcorn flick. Not a great film by any means, but its still okay on a few levels. Both UNDER SIEGE films are the only Steven Seagal films I ever watch.
Agree on Hugo Weaving as well ... such a fantastic villain that they could of taken anywhere with in this series, but failed to do it. I loved his confrontation with Neo in RELOADED, and his speech on "purpose of life". It really resonates deeply within oneself when looking at what you believe. They could of really developed that and taken it further ... but what do they do instead? Give us crappy, CGI, mindless action with 10,000 Smith's ... YAWN!
And yes, the original SAW is indeed the best of the series, but I think the SAW series deserves a whole heap of credit for beign somewhat original with what they did with their traps, twist endings, and ability to keep the franchise interesting and at least entertaining ... rather than just have a bland psycho serial killer stalk his prey, and slice and dice. If nothign else, the SAW films left you in anticipation for the next chapter ... but thats my take. I enjoyed them all, except the last one ... which was executed very poorly.
And thank you for putting CHILD'S PLAY on here ... words can not describe my abborance of that franchise ... those films belong at the bottom of the biggest, deepest, film septic tank on earth. Fuck those films forever!!!
I was working as a technician at a cinema as the Matrix sequels were released. With all the build up, the anticipation amongst staff and customers was electrifying. I stupidly turned to a colleague and said, "wouldn't it be a shame if these Matrix films turn out to be a complete let down"?!
I was joking of course, but ended up eating my words.
As for Child's Play... it's one of my mum's favourite films. Weird.
With hindsight, I think I could've seen any film on this list and never worried about a continuation of the franchise. Although I enjoyed the Saw sequels for what they were, in essence, they're just a one trick pony. An enjoyable one trick pony, but I don't feel particularly bothered with seeing any of them again bar the original.
