Real Steel 2011 ★★★

This shouldn't work. it just shouldn't.

Featuring an incredbliy annoying child who only just manages to stay below jake lloyd levels of hatred. the sight of him and the robot dancing into the arena was for me the most toe-curlingey cheesy scene of last year for me. add in Hugh Jackman acting like an arsehole for the first half and you should get a gigantic turd

but somehow it leaves you with a smile. blame the score, my love of underdog sports movies and Jackman turning on the charm towards the end but as soon as the final fight is taking place i was engrossed and cared about what happened. Put in a likeable (for a huge lost fan like myself) supporting actress and have great popcorn fluff

great effects on the robots with the fights chorographed by Sugar Ray Leonard work well and have more character than they should have and deliver as the memorable scenes that they should be.

Overall then its fluff. bloody enjoyable fluff and you can do a lot worse. worth a rent at least

  • Absolutely agreed. I only watched this for Evangeline Lilly, I love her, and didn't expect anything but a cheesy kids movie, but I was really surprised by this and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Check out "Afterwards" with her if you haven't, yet, was really impressed.
