2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 ★★★★

"I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave."

Let me start by saying that the visuals were spectacular. The cinematography, the sterile interiors of the Discovery One, the surreal landscapes - all excellent. The classical soundtrack is memorable, and gives many scenes a daunting feeling. For once, I found the oft-cited criticism that Kubrick's films feel cold, sterile and lacking in humanity to ring somewhat true. That said, the character of HAL was humanised to great effect. Keir Dullea's performance is understated, and works well. The pacing is a little too slow for my tastes, though it doesn't hurt the movie in any significant way.
