Growing up we had a family tradition where we took turns picking a movie that we would watch together after a holiday meal. And one Christmas, that is how I introduced "Monty Python's Life of Brian" to my family. We watched it twice because my mother kept repeating "what did he say?" but once she finally understood "he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy", she was hooked. Years later she was still calling people "big nose" and telling them to "piss off."
Brian, played by Graham Chapman, was born on the same day as Jesus but in a manger down the way, later he is mistaken for the Messiah and hilarity ensues. Of course, as a religious satire it was controversial in its time and I doubt a film like this would be received any better in this day and age. Even with the controversy, it was considered a box office success. As with all Monty Python movies each member played many characters.
Love this movie and my favorite scene is the ending "Always look on the bright side of life."
