I have always had a thing for Gangster movies and The Godfather Part II is the best. In weaving two parallel stories, that of Michael Corleone's personal decline as he expands his empire and Vito Corleone as he rises to head his crime family, Francis Ford Coppola creates a masterpiece I have enjoyed repeatedly.
In my opinion this is Al Pacino's best performance. His Michael is no longer the naive son of the first movie but instead is a ruthless leader doing what ever it takes to secure the family business. Michael claims "It's not personal, it's business" and yet his decisions to protect his business take a highly personal toll on all those around his as well as himself.
The ensemble cast has to be considered one of the best of all time and Robert DeNiro is another stand out as the young Vito Corleone. The cinematography, the score, the screenplay all blend together to create a perfect movie for me, my couch and a lazy afternoon.
