Films That Gave Me Unrealistic Sporting Delusions

I watched these films and thought "Yeah! I can be an athlete and excel in that sport!" in spite of all evidence to the contrary/the overwhelming impossibility of it all...

  • I had a mate who became a professional wrestler. He was also signed to the WWE for a year, but quit the WWE (!) because he made more money (!!) at his normal job. Admittedly, it was a highly-placed job making high 5 figures and he's got a postgraduate degree in the field, but still!

  • Damn! I'd have to know what the job is (and the fact he's got a postgrad degree in it suggests he's passionate about the field) but if we put it down to a basic gut-feeling decision between 'money, security and a position' and 'wearing tights and grappling with big sweaty guys on TV' I think he may have made the wrong choice. :S

  • Well, his postgraduate degree is in mental health counseling and human services, and his job is one of those nebulous administrative jobs that requires filling out lots of paperwork and grants and things. He's a life-long wrestling fan and loved it, but A) he missed his wife and dogs and B) found himself buried beneath second-generation legacy kids in WWE's farm/politics system. If he stays where he is at, he will eventually make very, very good money.

  • Also, if you haven't seen it, you should add Breaking Away to this list.

  • Breaking Away sounds good so cheers for the tip. As for your mate, mental health counselling sounds like it offers the rewarding work that wrestling couldn't provide. I just hope he never ends up in a Warrior-type situation, having to get back in the ring and fight Tom Hardy so he doesn't lose his house...

  • Warrior should be added, it made me believe that I to could pull a door of a tank like Tom Hardy. Well, maybe not, great film though.

  • Good call and absolutely, excellent film. Most of all though, Warrior made me want to get into an intoxicated state and take to streets with the headphones in my ears blasting out the Moby Dick audiobook.
