Such Music...

This is a list of some of my favorite film scores. Some are very popular, Academy Award winning choices and some might be lesser known. You'll see a lot of John Williams on here because, well, there's no doubting that he created some of the most recognizable scores in the history of the movies. Here they are in no particular order. This is a work in progress.

  • Very cool list. Some obvious (John Williams and Danny Elfman are two of my favorites, as well), some memorable at the time but I've forgotten how great they were (12 Monkeys, Triplets of Belleville, The Hours especially) and some that were bold, but I'm glad to see made the cut (There Will Be Blood, The Dark Knight, TRON: Legacy). Have you checked out The Proposition? Nick Cave not only did the score, but wrote the film as well. Potent and really well done film.
Considering the accordion love shown here, wondering if Amelie is another one for the list. I'm also a huge fan of The Fountain's score, as well as Requiem for a Dream, though that is really, really hard to listen to without filling your brain with horrifying images.

  • I definitely need to add some Clint Mansell. I haven't seen the Proposition, but it looked interesting to me. I'll have to check it out. Yes, I remember the score to Amelie being good, but I can't recall any themes off the top of my head. I'm sure if I heard the music I would recognize it.

  • Great choices. I have a list made of all the scores I've purchased. I purchased DIRTY HARRY on my way home from watching it at the New Beverly last year (The Wright Stuff II).
But if I had a list like this, I'd have to put some Bond on there. I love ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. So happy to see some love shown to the great horror scores like ELM STREET. It is the only "slasher" film made in the 80's that had a score that you know the melody of the them. Other great Silvestri: QUICK AND THE DEAD, BACK TO THE FUTURE III, PREDATOR, ect. Jo LoDuca's ARMY OF DARKNESS, Basil's RED DAWN. I'd also include STRIPES and AIRPLANE. THE CROW, DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY... Last but not least, THE GOONIES. I should just make a list like this - not just of the soundtracks that I own. But making a list of the film scores you went out and bought for me, spoke volumes on what I thought of the film at the time.

  • Great list. I particularly enjoyed Moon, There Will Be Blood and Ed Wood too, great inclusions.

I'd add Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' efforts for The Social Network and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, awesome original scores.

  • Okay - here's the list of the scores that I own: letterboxd.com/johnquinn/list/score/
