Jay Cheel’s review:
Guy Pearce's character's unrelenting quips and jokes are not only unfunny, but borderline obnoxious. The filmmakers were going for Jack Burton meets John McClane but ended up delivering a lifeless, sassy sitcom character dropped in the middle of an action/thriller plot. Somebody please add a laugh track to this movie and complete the total sitcom experience.
I was excited by the promise of Escape From New York/Die Hard in space, but ended up getting "generic 1990's sitcom character" in space. There was sever lack of good action and fun/creative set pieces as well.
I'm not sure if he has a single line of dialogue that isn't sarcastic or a joke
So what are the two and a half stars for?
This was supposed to be two stars (which I will now fix). Those two stars come form the overall concept, the fact that it's not outrageously offensive (harmless), and me being overly kind. It's more of a 1-1.5.
Fair play, I actually gave it a 3 based on the fact that it was the definition of 'slightly above average' and didn't offend. Sounds like I wasn't as bothered the rapid-fire gaggery as you, but in hindsight it didn't really help me find anything out about the lead.
