  • The Stranger

    The Stranger 1946

    ★★★★ Watched 23 Nov, 2015

It's certainly not the strongest of Welles's films, or even the second strongest, but The Stranger is still an above-average post-war paranoia thriller. Welles sure did like to cast himself as villainous bastards, and you don't get much more villainous than a Nazi who orchestrated much of the Holocaust. It's not at all subtle, but it is effective.

  • Paul F. Tompkins: Crying and Driving

Paul F. Tompkins: Crying and Driving 2015

    ★★★★ Watched 14 Nov, 2015

Tompkins has really evolved from his earlier comedy, which was sort of observational comedy with an absurdist edge, to the longer-form autobiographical stuff he's doing now. There's some very funny stuff in this special, even though it often straddles the line between stand-up comedy and straight-up storytelling.

  • The Act of Killing

    The Act of Killing 2012

    ★★★★★ Watched 26 Jan, 2014

An absolutely brutal film. The casualness with which the most horrible of atrocities are treated by their perpetrators is truly shocking, especially for the fact that those perpetrators are shown as they are: three-dimensional, conflicted human beings. It's a fascinating and appalling study in how the human mind can rationalize doing terrible things, up to a point at least.
