Having done stand-up comedy for a while myself--and pretty unsuccessfully, I might add--I feel like this movie does a pretty good job of capturing just how joyless and depressing a profession it can be. The fact that that Gregg Turkington/Neil Hamburger was in the lead role was icing on the sad, sad cake. I can't say it's a fun movie to watch, but it's beautifully shot and quite haunting.

A pretty entertaining layman's primer on the mortgage crisis, with excellent performances from its stars but maybe a bit too much of Adam McKay patting himself on the back. It's certainly depressing how collectively we seem to have learned nothing from the crisis itself and everything is back to business as usual until the working class are made to suffer for the next big fuckup from the too-big-to-fail banks.

    The Act of Killing 2012

An absolutely brutal film. The casualness with which the most horrible of atrocities are treated by their perpetrators is truly shocking, especially for the fact that those perpetrators are shown as they are: three-dimensional, conflicted human beings. It's a fascinating and appalling study in how the human mind can rationalize doing terrible things, up to a point at least.
