There are two questions to ask about this, the second American attempt at remaking Godzilla:
1. Does it work as a movie?
2. Does it work as a Godzilla movie?
The answer to the first question is "Well almost, except for the dull-as-a-bag-of-dull-rocks lead character, the absolute humorlessness of the film, and some pretty big leaps in logic." The answer to the second question is, "Uggh. No."
Let's put it this way: you could entirely remove Godzilla from the movie…
An absolutely brutal film. The casualness with which the most horrible of atrocities are treated by their perpetrators is truly shocking, especially for the fact that those perpetrators are shown as they are: three-dimensional, conflicted human beings. It's a fascinating and appalling study in how the human mind can rationalize doing terrible things, up to a point at least.
