John C. Olsen’s review:
I tried to look at this movie with fresh eyes and not compare it too much with the original, but it's hard not to.
It had some nice moments, but mostly bad. For example, I really did enjoy the soundtrack very much. I also enjoyed much of the modernized environments and ideas (just poorly executed often). As for cons... First of all, whats up with a political correct cast!? As for the extra guy, it kinda worked and kinda didn't. It didn't bother me too much in the end. The dialogue however felt forced, unnatural, so did the performances, but unsure if that's because of the acting, directing, editing or a bit of everything. The earth sequences felt a lot better made than the space ones though. Overall the whole movie felt very rushed, and now for my number one con... Everything that was unsaid, left for you to understand without words in the original movie, was now spelled out to you in detailed dialogue. I almost take that as an insult to human intelligence. Another thing I quickly noticed in this one that's also very much used in the original, is silence, no music or any other sound. It just felt awkward in the 2002 version while in the original, it was just as important as an actor.
With a different cast (or better quality check), as well as if they've left some of the thinking to their audience involving them more, then maybe it would have been a decent remake. At least it would have been a more respectful one if anything.
