Jeremy Heilman’s review:
Some terrific comic delivery scattered about here, but this feels rather dull and undercooked in a way that Bug (Friedkin's previous adaptation of a Letts play) never was. Visually, it's bold but rarely potent. Dramatically, the shift from noir to Grand Guignol doesn't click. Thematically, it seems to only want to punish us. For a film that has so many awful things happening to its characters, I would have liked to have either cared or squirmed more.
