    Boom!

As I am working my way through the James Bond blu-ray set, I "realized" that none of the Bond movies would equal "From Russia with Love" until we got to Daniel Craig's Bond films.

    I was dead wrong.

The Spy Who Loved Me is every bit as good as From Russia, though a different kind of movie. FRWL is a darker espionage thriller. TSWLM is spontaneous and kinetic - constant action, constant threat, and constant fun. It fulfills the…

  • The Man with the Golden Gun 1974

    ★★★ Watched 19 Apr, 2014

Film #9 - As I work my way through the Bond films, I rank this on par with Goldfinger, although I give Goldfinger the slight edge.

This may be the best looking Bond film to date - I like the aesthetic of the 70s as it meshes with the far east - it just hots a sweet spot visually for me. I think this appreciation carried me through a dose of pretty standard Bond fare. Well, that visuals and Roger…

Nice little film. Too bad it'll probably spawn 10 shitty sequels.

  • Transcendence 2014

Silly. llogical. Uninspired. Unambitious. Bland. Boring. I will never watch this movie again.

To be honest, I'm just glad everyone else hates it too. After Captain America last week, I would have lost my mind if everyone liked this movie.

Roger Moore in "James Bond vs Black Folks"!

Once I realized a couple minutes in what this was going to be, I (as a black person) was equal parts eager and apprehensive. Eager to see a black villain and henchmen/organization, but apprehensive of the 1973 characterizations of black folks that I knew I would see.

On the whole, though, the good outweighed the bad, and I took a lot of the "bad" with a grain of salt. After all, every…

  • Diamonds Are Forever 1971

    ★★½ Rewatched 16 Apr, 2014

Film #7 - some bright spots but ultimately unfulfilling. How can I care about this movie when it seemed to me that Connery didn't care? The breakdown of the 2.5 stars = 2 for Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint; and .5 for Bambi and Thumper.

  • On Her Majesty's Secret Service 1969

    ★★½ Watched 15 Apr, 2014

Part 6 in the Bond Journey. This movie started off with a bang - I enjoyed the first 20-25 minutes more than any of the first five. The new James Bond headlines a distinctly more modern looking movie, with improvements in special effects and fight choreography. Lazenby brings a different physicality, with long sweeping punches that are exaggerated in their form and effects, with sound effects to match. OHMSS playfully teases the audience as it introduces the new actor, purposefully…

  • You Only Live Twice 1967

    ★★★ Watched 14 Apr, 2014

James Bond film number 5. A definite step up from Thunderball, You Only live Twice is as enjoyable as Goldfinger. As I progress through the movies chronologically, there are a couple of things to note:
    1. The special effects do not age well - they are starting to weigh on me. I find myself looking forward to the 80s, where I hope they are better.
    2. Sean Connery is also not aging well, maybe these movies are weighing on him…

  • Thunderball 1965

    ★★½ Watched 13 Apr, 2014

This is the fourth installment, and definitely the only one that I would classify as a bad film - even taking into account the purposefully campy nature (at least that is how i perceive it). Still, there are some fun scenes that had me unsure what my final rating would be. However, the boring, monotonous underwater action sealed the deal. My least favorite so far, and the most slap-dash and unattractive of the first 4. Also, the most self-aware.

  • Goldfinger 1964

    ★★★ Watched 12 Apr, 2014

Number 3 in the series - a step down from "Russia" but fun.

  • From Russia With Love 1963

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 07 Apr, 2014

Salacious, raunchy, corny, funny, bare-knuckled, strategic, a little bit sophisticated - and good to the last drop. Light years ahead of the first Bond film (Dr. No), FRwL gives me hope that I didn't waste my money on the whole Bond collection.

Goldfinger is next - it's going to have a hard time living up to this.

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2014

I feel like I'm in Bizarro-world, I truly can't understand why so many people like this movie. To me, this movie is almost laughably bad, and at best could be considered average. Maybe I'm getting old.

    (Very slight spoilers)

The action scenes are like a microcosm of the whole movie - stilted, badly paced, and awkward. Outside of the first action scene on the ship (which was pretty good), the action is awful - way too many starts and stops,…
