This is a difficult one to rate. Melodramatic, ridiculous, ostensibly low budget, all in ways that could have lost me. But it worked. I found myself laughing out loud, alone in my apartment, out of sheer incredulity.

What We Do in the Shadows 2014
A lighthearted mockumentary depicting the Vampire scene in Wellington.
The humour was light in some areas (particularly during the gathering), and I felt the film didn't have much to fall back on without it (such as an emotional or character arc). But I always enjoy Jemaine Clement's brand of humour, as seen in Flight of the Conchords, and this is another nice example.

To the Wonder 2012
This film shouldn't have worked on me, but it did.
I usually try to be aware of my environment and mood when I start a film. If there are distractions, or other things on my mind, I feel that I'm not giving the film a fair opportunity.
But I ignored both when I started this film; knowingly feeling tired, with household distractions, and yet it grabbed and held my attention from the first shot.

I'm surprised by the Letterboxd consensus on this film. It didn't do anything particularly daring, and the plot-related surprises I could see coming, but the characters were depicted well, I enjoyed their contrasts, and the scenes around Jordan were quite beautiful (particularly the desert sequence).
