  • The Beyond 1981

    ★★★★★ Added

Fulci's masterpiece is a genuinely frightening, gory, and atmospheric take on the zombie genre with tones of the supernatural.

  • Black Sunday 1961

    ★★★ Watched 01 Nov, 2012 1

Bava's classic gothic chiller about a witch returning from the grave to fulfill a centuries-old curse on the descendants of the brother who betrayed her.

  • The Fog 1980

    ★★★ Watched 01 Nov, 2012

A folksy horror yarn about a group of ghostly fishermen returning to exact revenge upon the town that betrayed them one hundred years after their death.

  • Lisa and the Devil 1976

    ★★★ Watched 31 Oct, 2012

I celebrated Halloween this year with a viewing of both the American cut and European original of Mario Bava's LISA AND THE DEVIL. The American cut (a.k.a. THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM) is an entirely different film with a possessed girl storyline added to a heavily edited version of the original. As is normally the case with these things, the original cut was superior -- an eery, gory, and atmospheric horror film that explored familiar gothic themes with vivid and original imagery. The American cut lacked the coherence of the original.

  • Incubus 1966

    ★★★★ Added

A really interesting film. It's filmed in Esperanto, which adds to its dream-like quality. William Shatner plays a young war hero who finds himself at the center of a war over his soul between the powers of good and evil.

  • Halloween II 2009

    ★★ Added 2

H2 is a disappointing follow-up to Zombie's take on the classic John Carpenter film. This one scores points for audacity because it plays around with the Myers mythology a bit, but it accomplishes little else.

  • I Spit on Your Grave 2010

    ★★★★ Added

Sarah Butler delivers a fine performance as Jennifer Hills in this Hollywood take on Zarchi's infamous shocker. This feels more like a horror film than the original, which plays more like a stunt than anything else. The revenge scenes are a bit overwrought, but that does not take much away from the film.

  • We Are the Night 2010

    ★★ Added

Slick, but ultimately bland, urban vampire tale featuring sexy female vampires traveling the world in search of blood and a good time.

  • Night of Dark Shadows 1971

    ★★★ Watched 22 May, 2012

I enoyed this second attempt at bringing the soap series to the big screen more than the first one. It is a gothic chiller that fans of the show are bound to enjoy.

  • House of Dark Shadows 1970

    ★★ Watched 21 May, 2012

A hurried re-hashing of the original episodes following the arrival of Barnabas Collins at Collinwood.

  • We Need to Talk About Kevin 2011

    ★★★ Watched 20 May, 2012

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  • The Countess 2011

    ★★★ Watched 15 May, 2012

Delpy is cold and beautiful as the titular countess Bathory, but some clunky dialogue and a plodding pace keep this one from a higher rating.
