Barbara 2012
A desperate girl desperately cries out, "Barbara" over the continuous crash of waves and I totally lost my shit. The movie had kind of been building to this moment without making it too obvious (you'll anticipate the turn in the narrative but you probably won't be prepared for the subtle punch to the guts it delivers), and it spoke volumes as to how moving and deliberate this whole film is. Lingering shots on a facial expression, or the motif of…

The Andromeda Strain 1971
The film's slow, methodical approach to the potential outbreak of an intergalactic biohazard might bore some, but if you buy into the pseudo-science you will be absolutely captivated by the astonishing levels of suspense achieved in the climax of this sci-fi thriller.

Armageddon 1998
I've been wrong about this film for a long time. This is probably the most American film ever made: it's racist, sexist, pro-military to the point of parody and absolutely dripping with cheese. Asians in the film are pre-modern rice eaters in tiny wooden huts, Russians are all drunks, African-Americans are wise cracking hoods or silverbacks, and women are either passive love objects or grinding sex objects. Contagion 2011
Contagion ought to go down as one of the best apocalyptic thrillers of all time, but it probably wont. It probably wont because there are no explosions, or gunfights, or supermodels pillow-fighting while interstellar robots compare penis size. Instead, Soderbergh crafts an intense, intimate thriller that focuses on the personal realities of individuals facing the near destruction of the human species - an awe inspiring feat considering the scale of the premise. Terrifyingly believable and handled with precision, I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that Steven Soderbergh has done for disease what Spielberg did for sharks. We're gonna need a bigger quarantine!
