The Pirates! Band of Misfits 2012 ★★

Reviewed Aug 17, 2012

If the filmmakers had spent less time on the visuals and more time on the script this film could have been a classic. Instead, what we get is a gorgeous and visually charming film that has absolutely no substance and comedy that relies on the most basic jokes. Even with an impressive voice cast there is little personality injected into the characters and the plot is painfully predictable. For viewers 5 and under Pirates! will probably appeal, for viewers older than this you will probably get bored very quickly and it is because we have been spoilt rotten. It is no longer enough for animation to appeal to kids, Pixar and Dreamworks et al. have proven that animated "childrens" films don't have to be moronic, and can subtly appeal to a broader audience often with jokes that will go right over the heads of younger audiences. Pirates! does not achieve this level of complexity at all. A missed opportunity.

  • I didn't much enjoy this either. But you do know it was claymation right? Not cg. Well the water was cg, but the rest was stop-motion.

So anyway, it would be ok for 5 year olds but there is the first scene where the pirates are beating eachother up and the scene at the end when

    ****SPOILER******

the queen is going to chop the bird's head off. So it's too violent for 5 year olds.
I would have liked it if it was more about pirating and treasure hunting. What was all this crap about the dodo and Darwin? Boring stuff.

  • You exactly nailed my thoughts on this film. I guess I'm also spoiled for wanting more.... but hey, what can I do?
