Better than the first. But Why does Adam Wingard (or any of the new crop of horror directors) feel the need to keep casting themselves? It's annoying and does a disservice to the films they make.
BUT the Indonesian cult segment alone made this film. I would have loved for someone to have turned than into a feature.
Better than the first film for sure, but still just okay in the grand scheme fo things.
Believe me, I'm as surprised as anyone that I'm giving this film 4 stars. But you know what? It was a simple, interesting premise and it was shot and acted well, kept the tension high throughout and is something I will recommend to friends and see myself watching several more times.
Can't get much higher praise than that in the modern (American) horror genre. This is one worth seeking out.
This 3 star review is for the first time view only. The nature of a film like this (or "The Usual Suspects") is that you enjoy it mostly because you want to find out what the catch is. Once you know how it all pans out, some of the power of the film fades, and you begin to see the weaknesses-- of which there are many in this film.
Still, an enjoyable watch that I'd recommend to anyone who hasn't yet seen it.
