Looper 2012
Looper is special. Actually, it's S-P-E-C-I-A-L.
It took me both 6 seconds and 6 days to figure that out. I saw it, thought about it every few hours for the next five days, then saw it again. I had to. Rian Johnson's time-travel yarn practically demands it. This is the third film from Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) and it is clearly his best. Where before the director was in the early stages of his professional career and finding his…

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012
Second viewing was in 48fps. And it was...weird. It's the best-looking 3D image I've seen from a technical standpoint. I never had to readjust my glasses or head (and since I wear regular glasses, that matters) and it was just such an easy viewing experience. That said, while I didn't hate the HFR, I never got used to it. I suppose it's possible this might be "the norm" 10-15 years from now and we'll look back at the hand-wringing as…

Prometheus 2012
Let's get one thing out of the way. Alien is perfect.
Or at the very least – if you don't want to say a movie can be perfect – we can say that Ridley Scott's 1979 science fiction-horror masterpiece is as close as a motion picture can get to that lofty claim. Which leads me to another thing.
Prometheus is not perfect.
The hardest thing that Scott's new science fiction-horror film has to overcome is also its biggest strength and…

Moonrise Kingdom 2012
Easily one of the best films of 2012 and Wes Anderson's best since The Royal Tenenbaums. Charming, funny, but still retaining that trademark Anderson deadpan and style which works better and is more modulated here. The performances are wonderful, particularly from the child actors (which is a credit to them and to Anderson). One of only a handful of films from the past year which I would love to watch multiple times in a year. Just a lovely film and a great fantastical version of childhood, summers, camps and first loves.

The Cabin in the Woods 2012
I don't know if The Cabin in the Woods heralds the end of horror as we know it, as some have suggested. It feels like a rebirth more than anything. This is a film that not only plays with and satirizes the conventions and boundaries of horror and horror-comedy, it lays down a challenge to everything that follows in its wake. It's not only one of the most intelligent horror films of recent years, but one of the most intelligent…

Zero Dark Thirty 2012
So what did I think of Zero Dark Thirty? It made my jaw hurt...in the best way possible. #AwesomeSauce

Life of Pi 2012
Nope, sorry. I have a great deal of respect for Ang Lee and the stuff at sea and with the tiger is decent enough (and undeniably beautiful). But it's thematic dogshit and ultimately not really about anything at all. It's pretty and sweet, but wishy-washy and has no deeper meaning. It's got National Geographic visuals with a Reader's Digest narrative. And while it is beautiful and colorful, it's not as good in using 3D as Hugo or Avatar. Except for…

Wreck-It Ralph 2012
Wreck-It-Ralph is awesome. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Genuinely hilarious and very Pixar-ish. Having Lasseter on board prob didn't hurt that. It's always sorta weird when you're the only one in a crowded theater laughing at a joke. But there's a Royal "We" joke in Wreck-It-Ralph that had me do that...apparently I enjoy Royal "We" jokes more than most. I laughed at a lot of little things and bits that most of these young kids wouldn't pick up on. Just a really enjoyable, fun movie that will be easy to justify re-watching numerous times as time goes by. Mark of a great movie.

Iron Man 3 2013
I expected a lot of things from IRON MAN 3, but I'm not sure I expected a Marvel TERMINATOR comedy. Not that that's a bad thing. It plays way more like a comedy than I thought it would, even with Shane Black at the helm.
There are some dark aspects to it, but the trailers were a bit misleading since it really doesn't show all the banter and one-liners. Again, that's not a bad thing. Nice surprise actually. It honestly…

Les Misérables 2012
Fuck Tom Hooper and the horse shot in close-up he rode in on. I will not forgive or forget. I'll be Javert to his Valjean...except for the whole throwing myself off a bridge thing.
I love Les Mis. My problem isn't with Les Mis. My problem is with Hooper. He really couldn't have done a worse job if he tried. I didn't hate it, but this should have been SO much better. I mean seriously, the whole movie is in…

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968
The grandfather of modern science fiction, it stands as Kubrick's magnum opus. It is simply unlike anything before it and remains one-of-a-kind to this day.
