Best of the Surreal

In no particular order...

Surreal, off-kilter, dream-like, trippy...these are not necessarily the best, but some of my favorites. I avoided putting most (but not all) of David Lynch's filmography as every single one of his films would likely make the list.

Would love to hear other's recommendations as this is one of my favorite "sub-genres"...

  • Great List!
Now this is completely out of left field and maybe offers a more grounded form of surrealism, I'd like to suggest the works of Alex van Warmerdam. I've got a list of them here They are in Dutch though and maybe hard to find.

  • Awesome! I'm always up for looking into a new director, especially one that makes movies like this. Your list looks interesting, any suggestions on where to find his stuff?

  • Great list Josh! You'll have to check out Beyond the Black Rainbow. That's one of the weirdest films I've seen.

  • @josh the interweb is of course a place where I think most of his work can be found. I have no idea about netflix and such as those services are not available to us poor people in Holland. Everything has been released on dvd though, so you're bound to find it somewhere. Start out with Abel if you can. Cracking film.

  • @phil . a buddy ripped me a torrent of Beyond the Black rainbow from Isohunt.I don"t know if it's still up on the site or not. Good recommendations for Valhalla Rising and Fear X. Amer actually reminded me a lot of Beyond The Black Rainbow( In style not subject matter). I hope this gets a blu-ray release soon because the torrent had a watermark and the picture wasn't the best. Still watchable though.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Will start trying to track down Beyond the Black Rainbow ASAP.

@Phil - lots of good recommendations there. I have seen none of those! I am going to research them and try and figure out which i can get my hands on. Any of those you would recommend I seek out first? Usually for me, the stranger the better, but obviously the story and characters should be strong.

  • Side note: just watched trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow - WOW! Looks unbelievable.

  • BTBR was everything you'd want in a "mind-fuck' movie.
