I wanted to give this film 4-5 stars. The middle section is so engaging. But the ending is so unsatisfying that I had to bump it down to three. It is interesting to see that Matteo Garrone has some impressive range…this film is so different than Gomorrah. I'll still be looking forward to whatever he comes up with next.
Brit Marling just keeps on killing it. Her performance here is great…and so is her writing.
It is interesting to have seen this film just a few days after I first saw 'The Master' as there are some obvious parallels. But ultimately the two films are very different and are about different subjects.
It takes a cheap shortcut for some exposition, but otherwise this is a nice little sleeper of a movie that I highly recommend.
I know Cazale only made five films, but I still wish this film about him were a bit longer (it clocks in at about 40 minutes). I hate how the doc's producer Brett Ratner forces his mug and slight opinions in amongst the otherwise very estimable group of actors, directors and generally creative people. If you're a fan of "New Hollywood" this is a must see.
