Having not seen this for a very long time I found this to be an interesting watch. This may be one of the most "movie" movies I've seen in sometime. Which is to say it very much is a hollywood movie. Every line is either a dramatic platitude or something for the trailer, every shot could be used as a poster, poses and slow motions abound. It's not enough for the movie to be about fires, it's also a murder…
Haven't seen this one since the theater, I thought "Hey, it's been ten years, I'm a different person, maybe I will come to appreciate this film, maybe there is something there."
And this is the credit I will give the Zombie film, I've never forgotten it. In a world full of very blah, forgettable remakes, this one sure has stuck.
Zombie does have a voice and he puts this voice onto the remake, that is something we usually want when…
I found I respected a lot of the choices this film made rather then actually enjoyed watching it.
Once I realized this is really a Jennifer Jason Leigh film with Jason Patric playing more a support for her story I found I was enjoying the film much more. Think a lot of the narrative bumps I felt will work better on a rewatch.
There are scenes that are pretty amazing, and the direction is really rock solid, there's nothing in this film to imply a first time film maker, let alone someone who would only make this one film. Worth a watch
