The Cabin in the Woods 2012 ★★★★½

Reviewed Apr 20, 2012

Before I start talking about the movie or anything, I have to say that this is one of the first horror movies that I've actually gone to see at the cinema. I'm not really entertained by horror movies because of three reasons - they're either really not scary, too scary or very very very bad. But this... This I had to see.
If you read the preview I posted some time ago, then you might know that this was written by Joss Whedon (Google him!) and well... Anything he does is worth at least watching (if not being crazy for). Fun fact, it was actually filmed somewhere around 5 years ago I think? Not a 100% sure, but still, a long time ago. It was only published now.
The film itself looks like a classic horror movie, but it really isn't. It starts off as any horror movie would - by introducing the, yes, incredibly clichéd characters. Not one of them is very sympathetic but there are some characters who you maybe wish less would die. I will of course emphasize that this was on purpose. Everything about the movie is meant to seems very typical. And I don't want to oversell it, but to me, that is exactly what made it... Surprising and exciting. Not much happens when you wait for it to and mostly you're shocked when you least expect it. Maybe that's just me, but judging by the audience, it's not. Also, it's very funny! It's like a horror comedy that is a homage to it's genre but also parodies it quite a lot.
It's very unusual but the thing that's greatest about it (at least to me) is that it doesn't leave you unsatisfied. It has been called one of the greatest horror movies of the 21st century but again, I don't want you to go see it expecting to see a "masterpiece" or "instant classic". 'Cause I guess that that was one of my biggest problems with it. It was great but I kinda hoped it to be phenomenal. But still, don't get me wrong, incredibly fun. And they pulled of the most amazing things that you wouldn't think they could. Because I don't want to spoil anything, I'm just going to suggest that you go see this movie, EVEN if you're not a fan of horror movies. For goodness sake's, I definitely am not, but not only is "Cabin in the Woods" a good movie, it's perfect for getting a bit more familiar with the genre.
So yeah, chica chia pow wow!

  • I had a blast seeing this in theaters. The last 15 minutes or so was badass!

  • Totally! And when I heard Sigourney Weaver's voice for the first time, I was so excited. And then in the end... Ahhh, epic!

  • Indeed! I just wish they wouldn't have giving so much away in the trailers because I think it spoiled the film for a lot of people. Overall it's a great film especially when you've been a horror fan for a long time and see all the things they pay homage to in this movie.

  • Exactly! And the actors were great. Very well cast.

  • Yes they were. I'm really becoming a Richard Jenkins fan. He's excellent in The Visitor.
