Pretty self-explanatory I think.
@Claire I am taking your response to mean that you hate every other movie on this list and thus I find it totally acceptable for you to like Repo!
I like Romeo + Juliet, Hard Candy and Irreversible too. But 4 out of 25 isn't too bad I guess.
@Brad While I find the story heartbreaking and truly compelling, the method in which that story is told is complete bullshit. The director needs to get out of the way and not do a hard sell on something that doesn't need to be sold. But since he doesn't it goes from annoying to irritating to rejection within a reel or two.
Thanks for making this list Matt. It reaffirms that when you hate a movie, I best rush out to see it because there's a high probability I will love it :)
You should totally start a separate shorter podcast called "Why it stinks" and have each episode be for each film on this list, and you can elaborate more on precisely why you despise the movie. The title for this list now officially makes me think of you as Jay Sherman. At least I agree with you on ANOTHER EARTH.
@Jim I expect no less from a DePalma apologist. ;)
Oddly enough, I think I've talked at length about the majority of these movies on the various podcasts I've been on, including yours. generally I just find people saying my opinions are invalid or I'm just making shit up rather than people actually listen to criticism about them. Which is a shame.
Well I did just hear your take on DARK KNIGHT, and found myself mostly in agreement with you on that one too. We have our moments of shared disgust, few and far between as they are. I always enjoy your criticisms, and never find them invalid since you clearly have a lot of conviction in your opinion. At times your emotions get the best of you when yelling at Kurt :)
Also, I recommend maybe seeing the 3-hour director's cut of MARGARET that just came out on DVD, instead of the chopped version you saw. I hear it's much better and I'm really looking forward to it. I liked the edited version just fine though especially for Paquin's performance (still shocked by how good she was), but maybe we'll have to agree to disagree on that one once again.
or call the segment "what rot will lose his shit over" because yeah, like Jim, you are hitting a lot of my favorites here.
Margaret is a f'n terrible film. All cuts, even the Scorsese cut.
No Melancholia? That was just as bad as Dancer in the Dark.
And I thought I was the only person in the world who hated Almost Famous... NICE! I don't get why the internet went all apeshit for Another Earth either. They took a legitimately great concept and then wrote a script that a fucking Mexican telenovela would be embarrassed about. Some of the worst dialog ever written!
