  • Dredd 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 21 Dec, 2012

I think I've said before that I don't buy that style without substance is necessarily a bad thing. DREDD (let's give it the all-caps it deserves, people) fits into this view nicely. Now, I certainly don't think DREDD is devoid of substance by any means, it has a nice, tightly designed action plot and I do think there is a nice progression of Anderson (well done by Thirlby, she's great). But really, this is a movie about style and aesthetics…

    ★★½ Watched 11 Jan, 2013

I'm not afraid to say I sort of really don't like David O Russell (I think I <3 Huckabees is garbage) but this was pretty ok, I suppose. This is an incredible look at an incredible man, and one of my favorite films ever. Natchwey is beyond interesting and the film doesn't candy coat anything. The "camera-on-a-camera" is brilliant and the rest of the film is made with a reverent, journalistic sensibility that is necessitated by the sobering subject matter. Beyond highly recommended.

Burtynsky is one of the greatest contemporary photographers, and Manufactured Landscapes does him justice. Much like in War Photographer, here the viewer is presented with a faithful filmic approach to the photographer's material. There are some amazing shots in this film, and I think the best part is that the film complements the photographs, and vice-versa. Could also serve as a good introduction to Burtynsky, I presume.
