The Guilt Trip 2012
I wanted to like this warmhearted but terminally flat comedy. Rogen and Streisand are good together but the material's so uninspired that even my soft spot for road movies of all sorts didn't help. Also strange: A perverse habit of casting funny people in roles that don't allow them to be funny. Casey Wilson, for instance, plays a receptionist. Not a funny receptionist, just someone with a few lines that move the plot along.

Jack Reacher 2012
This one just creeps over the three-star line for me. It's a gripping procedural with some really extraordinary stretches—starting with a remarkable wordless opening sequence—but Cruise just doesn't work as the lead. That pains me to say as I usually like him. And having never read any of the books in the series from which it's taken, I don't really have any preconceptions about the character and could care less that Cruise is shorter than the hero of the source…
