Karen Krizanovich’s review:
'Ghost' for the new century, Reese Witherspoon stars as young workaholic emergency doctor who lack of a personal life isn’t an issue until she wakes up apparently dead and standing in her own apartment as a ghost, arguing with its new handsome occupant (Mark Ruffalo), a man with a few personal ghosts of his own. A fresh if somewhat bumpy look at the course of true love, it benefits from a stunning San Francisco backdrop and a suitable melancholy tone as the 'dead' woman and the emotional zombie of a man fall in love with each other. While Waters is noted for bringing out the comic in otherwise difficult situations, here his talent turns on the dramatic front, bringing genuine tension to a love story that ends up grabbing the audience by the lapels and giving them a good “memento mori” shake. Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) is perfectly cast as the local bookshop mystic.
