The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012
Takes too long to get going, and very inconsistent in its approach to storytelling. Completely lacking in character development, and the charm that really made "The Lord of the Rings". Voids the need for two sequels.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona 2008
Looks beautiful and there's a robust chemistry between all the characters. Rather enjoyed it, apart from the abrupt ending and that really annoying opening (theme) song.

Road to Perdition 2002
Superb film all round. Great performances, cinematography, story and dialogue. Topped off with a magnificent musical score.

After Life 1999
I'm a huge fan of Hirohazu Koreeda's work, and 'After Life' is a thought-provoking and inventive piece of story-telling and cinematic structure. While the romantic drama between the main two characters doesn't really pan out into anything particularly memorable or decisive, Koreeda's exploration into the concept of memory and death is a delightful and intricate one. Semi-reverting to his documentary style of filming, 'After Life' manages to frame the complex narratives and realities of both cherished and forgotten memories into a magical and charming piece of cinema.
